Together With Books

Story Time for Parent and Child is a special ministry of the library in cooperation with the preschool ministry.  It is held in the library at 10:00 a.m. on the second Thursday of each month, September through May, for children ages 3 to 5.  Children must be accompanied by an adult.  Siblings are always welcome.

During story time, a carefully selected picture book is read to the children by the librarian or special guest.  Then the children make an age-appropriate craft or participate in a special activity that relates to the story.  Parents are encouraged to spend time reading to their children while in the library and may check out books to take home.

The purpose of Together with Books is to:

• Expose preschoolers and their parents to good children’s literature
• Enable parents to spend quality time with their preschoolers at church
• Develop a love of reading from an early age
• Help parents select the best books for their children
• Introduce young families to the resources of the library
• Reach preschoolers and their families for the Lord Jesus Christ and First Baptist Church

Encouragement for Mothers Who Teach

The First Baptist Church Library is a place of encouragement for mothers who teach their children at home. The library has one of the best collections of resources for homeschooling parents in this area. Nancy Uriniak, church librarian, is an experienced homeschool mom and is happy to answer your questions and direct you to the right resource for your need. The children’s collection has a wonderful selection of “living books” for the homeschooled child, many of which are recommended in some of the best homeschooling curriculum guides such as Five in a Row, Sonlight, TruthQuest and My Father’s World. All homeschooling families in this area are invited to use the First Baptist Church Library. Please come by the library and check us out!

“One of the highest of human duties is the duty of encouragement. It is easy to laugh at men’s ideas, it is easy to pour cold water on their enthusiasm; it is easy to discourage others. The world is full of discouragers. We have a Christian duty to encourage one another. Many a time a word of praise or thanks or appreciation or cheer has kept a man on his feet. Blessed is the man who speaks such a word.” William Barclay

“Be strong and let your heart take courage, all you who hope in the Lord.” Psalm 31:24

Summer Reading Clubs For Kids

Each summer the FBC Library offers a six week Summer Reading Club for kids ages 3 (Read to Me) – Grade 6. Every child who reads 15 books receives a certificate. Prizes are given to all the participants at the awards party and special recognition is given to the top readers in each age division.

Over seventy-five children signed up to read in the Reading is a Ball Summer Reading Club 2007. Sixty-one children turned in their reading logs and read over 2,503 books! Fifty-six children read fifteen books or more & received certificates and forty three children read enough books to have a book placed in their honor in the FBC library. Congratulations to these readers!

Numerous studies have shown that summer reading programs help children retain reading skills over the summer break.

Summer Reading Club For Moms

Summer 2007 was the first year for the Reading Club for Moms. Any mom who signed up her children for the summer reading club was eligible to participate. Over fifteen moms signed up to participate and nine moms turned in their reading logs. These nine moms read a total of fifty-five books. The two top reading moms are now sporting hot pink book bags! Go Moms!
